Newsletter 11                                                               18 March 2021

Listening is often the only thing needed to help someone”. – Unknown

Our learners’ emotional wellbeing determines the way they think, feel and act. Whatever we say and do, as well as their environment, determines our learners’ emotional health. “Even the smallest act of caring for another person is like a drop of water – it will make ripples throughout the entire pond.”
People don’t always need advice. Sometimes all they need is a hand to hold, an ear to listen and a heart to understand.” – Unknown

We would like our last day of term to be a celebration. Our celebration will include a civvies day for the learners, Soap Box Derby, a performance by Act Studios and an Easter message, all of which will take place within the COVID regulations.

We appreciate our parents’ enthusiasm in wanting to attend functions, practices and matches. However, it is not our decision that parents are not permitted on the school premises. We comply with the directives received from the Department of Education. As soon as there are new directives that accommodate parents on the school premises, we will let you know. Thank you for your understanding and continuous support during these trying times.

Here are the times when the school will close for the different grades on 26 March:
11:15 – school closes for Grade 1s & 2s
11:30 – school closes for Grade 3s, 4s & 5s
11:40 – school closes for Grade 6s & 7s

11:50 – school closes for Grade 8s & 9s
12:00 – school closes for Grade 10s, 11s & 12s.

We are proud to announce that the annual Cultural Festival will soon be in full swing.

This year the theme is “Next Level”.  Many of the sections require this theme to be depicted, so please ensure that you are aware of the requirements of each section.

Mass participation is a priority and we encourage each learner to participate in at least one item.

Entry fees will only be paid for Crafts, "Terrific Tekkies", “Flavour Festival”, “Master Class” and “Leading Ladies”.

Each learner will receive a certificate. The judges’ decision is final. You are kindly requested to guide your child in the selection and practising of items. You are welcome to coach your child.

Please note: The staff are only in charge of various sections but are not responsible for coaching the learners. Please ensure that your child is well prepared as an unrehearsed item may embarrass children.

Marks are awarded for participation. These participation marks, as well as the symbols achieved during their performance, are combined and calculated to determine the best overall cultural learners. The learners will be announced at the Big Brag evening.

Please note the restrictions involved in the different sections and bear in mind that some of these items will take place on the same day.

No late entries will be accepted. The closing date for entries is 26 March 2021.

All learners from our school may participate in and attend the festival as spectators during the afternoon. However, no learners from other schools are allowed to participate in our Cultural Festival. At present, parents cannot watch or listen to the Cultural Festival items due to COVID regulations.

All items are entered into using the Parent Portal, except for instrumental items which must be entered using Google forms, due to the variety of categories available for each instrument. (See the link on the Parent Portal.)
Please follow the link below to the Parent Portal and click on the Student’s tab.
Click on the learner’s photo and select the “Cultural Festival Entries” tab.
For more information about an item, click on the particular activity. Indicate your selection by clicking on the square. Once you have made all your selections, click on the “Sign Up” button at the top right of the screen. The items/activities will appear at the bottom of the screen and you have enrolled/entered successfully.

We are terribly excited about the participation of so many of our girls and boys in the Midi Netball, Mini Netball and Bulletjie Rugby.

It is also not too late to get involved in the exercises. We would like to see even more of our learners involved.

We kindly request that parents complete the information on the following form as completely as possible.

We hope and trust that the season will be a wonderful experience for your son or daughter.

In 2020, the Grade 6 learners took part in an English writing competition from the Minimag called Word Warriors. We are delighted to announce that Zilu Wei was placed in the top four of the country and Lara Wiehahn in the top fourteen. (Lara came in the top four in 2019.)

Midstream College would like to congratulate our two star writers who have taken their writing and our school to the next level.

“To write means more than putting pretty words on a page. The act of writing is to share a part of your soul with the world.”

We are so excited to be competing in our first qualifier over the weekend of 27 and 28 March 2021 at Eaton Farm. Midstream College Primary School has 10 riders competing and we wish them all the very best in their events.
